Hazardous Materials Packaging

Hazardous materials are solids, liquids, or gases that can harm people, other living organisms, property, or the environment. They are often subject to chemical regulations. Hazardous materials include materials that are radioactive, flammable, explosive or corrosive, oxidizers or asphyxiants, biohazardous, toxic, pathogen or allergen substances and organisms.

Hazardous materials therefore need to be packaged correctly with the correct precautions depending on the type of hazardous materisl being shipped. Hazardous materials are divided into classes on the basis of the specific chemical characteristics producing the risk.

Packing Groups

Packing groups are used for the purpose of determining the degree of protective packaging required for Dangerous Goods during transportation.

  • Group I: great danger, and most protective packaging required
  • Group II: medium danger
  • Group III: least danger among regulated goods, and least protective packaging within the transportation requirements
