Demand for lithium poses challenge to industry

24 September 2015 | Industry News & Regs

With an ever increasing demand for lithium as a means of powering products and equipment that we use on a day-to-day basis, such as laptops and handheld devices, the challenges facing industry remain real.

Lithium – by far the most effective natural material used as agent for producing batteries – is being increasingly used for vehicles. As the demand and interest in hybrid and electricity powered cars increases, the demand for lithium and lithium batteries does too.

As we have seen in recent times, airlines, states and regulators are nervous about the future of lithium. It’s ultimate effects – if handled recklessly – can be deadly. But that doesn’t mean risks are ultimately going to happen.

They can be mitigated by effective lithium battery packaging and a willingness to sit up and listen to the needs of shippers and regulators, a safe compromise can be found.

The need to educate on lithium is important too. For, without education, a proper understanding and appreciation will never be truly gained. By bringing all of those involved in the process around a table, hearing their concerns and worries and outlining correct procedures, risks can be mitigated and trust can be gained and appreciated – as standard.

So, whilst the demand for lithium poses a challenge, it is not one that should be too daunting. By bringing all those involved onto the same page, we can enable industry to grow.
